It is a situation where the heart is aching because of a situation, or an event or maybe a relationship issue.</span></span></p><p>Emotional pain is the suffering you experience when dealing with difficult feelings. Experiencing grief or loss emotionally is considered emotional pain. Experiencing prolonged anger and frustration can lead to emotional pain. </p><p>The mind and the emotions are also intertwined. For example, anxiety can increase the intensity of emotions and the severity of emotional pain. On the other hand, emotional pain may cause more anxiety.</p><p>You may feel broken or unable to function &nbsp;because your heart feels too heavy and the mind refuses to cooperate.</p><p><img decoding="async" role="img" class="emoji" alt="?" src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/svg/1f46d.svg">Many a time, emotional pain could be &nbsp;triggered by a relationship issue. Every day is completely different.</strong></p><p><strong>&nbsp;Or there might be some of us who have a routine, but it's a poor routine. 	<div class="tve-cb"><div class="thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element"><p><br><strong>Another example would be that, you might have a routine that, this is the time when I'm doing my cooking or I'm doing my dishwashing or I'm talking to my family. </strong></p><p><strong>Irrespective of the state of your mind, irrespective of the anxiety you feel, when you go ahead and follow your routine, you are changing your brain patterns. &nbsp;By following a routine, you're able to bring your mind back on track from an anxious mode of thinking to a more calmer state of mind.</strong></p><p><strong>So, even though if routine might feel uncomfortable or you might feel uneasy about going into the routine because of anxiety or because you don't feel like it, it still is extremely helpful to have a reasonable, consistent routine.</strong>
<br><br></p></div><div class="thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element"><h3 data-css="tve-u-180a9ed25c0" style="text-align: center;"><strong><strong>&nbsp;The other thing that routine does:<br>It brings expectation. </strong></strong></h3><h3 data-css="tve-u-180a9ed25c0" style="text-align: center;"><strong><strong>So, in addition to a structure, it brings expectations.</strong></strong></h3></div><div class="thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element"><h3 data-css="tve-u-180a9fbb374" style="text-align: center;" class=""><strong><strong><br>The mind knows exactly what to expect.</strong></strong></h3><h3 class="" data-css="tve-u-180a9fbb374" style="text-align: center;"><strong><strong>For example, say you have a routine of a morning walk, the mind knows at this particular time, if I go for a walk &nbsp;this is what I expect. </strong></strong></h3><h3 class="" data-css="tve-u-180a9fbb374" style="text-align: center;"><strong><strong>Maybe my arms and my legs might ache and maybe I'm not able to do other tasks, but I know exactly what to expect will happen when I go for a walk.<br>Expectation and certainty always reduces anxiety.</strong></strong></h3></div><div class="thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element"><h3 data-css="tve-u-180a9ed25c0" style="text-align: center;" class=""><strong><strong>&nbsp;Expectation and certainty always reduces anxiety.</strong></strong></h3></div></div>

The heartbeat happens automatically.</p><p dir="ltr">You're not consciously working to see everything happens smoothly at the cellular level. All the processes happen naturally. &nbsp;It happens automatically. And that is being done by your subconscious mind through the nervous system, through the autonomic nervous system.</p><p dir="ltr">And that's how powerful the subconscious mind is. It's helping you be alive. It's helping you function well.</p><p dir="ltr">Even in your day to day life, the subconscious mind controls 95% of your life.</p><h5 class="" dir="ltr" style="" data-css="tve-u-186d8cd3f6b"><em><strong><span style="--tcb-applied-color: var$(--tcb-skin-color-16)  !important; color: var(--tcb-skin-color-16);" data-css="tve-u-186d8cac106">If you're trying to drive, you're not consciously saying, oh, this is my accelerator I have to press this. This is the brake I have to press this. It just happens automatically.</span></strong></em></h5><p dir="ltr">If you're talking to someone you're not consciously thinking and emoting every time.There are so many automatic responses that happen. And that is very, very important.</p><p dir="ltr">You're instinctively doing a lot of tasks that you need to do. You're instinctively brushing your teeth or taking care of your body, taking care &nbsp;of your Children, doing your jobs.</p><p dir="ltr">And these automatic responses are controlled by the subconscious mind. And the subconscious mind is really so powerful.</p><p dir="ltr">But it runs on patterns and programs and many of those patterns and programs are positive and useful. And there are quite a bit of programs that are not useful and not helpful. For example, the patterns and programs that control some of your not so not so good habits.</p><p dir="ltr">You &nbsp;might not want to eat a particular thing, but you end up eating too much, maybe too many chocolates, maybe too many ice creams or maybe too much food, too much junk food.</p><p dir="ltr">Or maybe you you might not want to say certain things to certain people and be more controlled in your speech and more sweet in your speech, but invariably you might be finding that you're bursting into anger or getting upset and irritated with someone and saying things that you don't want to be saying.</p><p dir="ltr">And that's again, a subconscious program that is making you speak those things automatically, which you don't want to and you want to be able to change those programs.</p><h5 class="" dir="ltr" style="color: var(--tcb-color-0)  !important; --tcb-applied-color:var$(--tcb-color-0)  !important;"><span style="color: var(--tcb-skin-color-16);"><span style="--tcb-applied-color: var$(--tcb-skin-color-16) !important;"><strong>So subconscious reprogramming is a very, very important aspect of taking care of ourselves and we cannot change our habits or change these programs in our subconscious mind by just going through the conscious mind.</strong></span></span></h5><p dir="ltr"><span style="--tcb-applied-color: var$(--tcb-skin-color-16)  !important; color: var(--tcb-skin-color-16);"></span>You have to get deep down into the subconscious mind to be able to do that. And there are different ways to go into your subconscious mind.</p><h5 class="" dir="ltr"><strong><em>One of the ways to go into your subconscious mind is hypnosis and &nbsp;I teach people that. And it's possible that we may not even get started. This kind of change-making may or may not be sustainable for us and especially consistent change becomes a challenge.</strong></p><h4 data-css="tve-u-1803da5741b" dir="ltr" style="color: rgb(26, 19, 126) !important; --tcb-applied-color:rgb(26, 19, 126)  !important; text-align: center;" class=""><em><strong>Here is a model that I practice and I want to share with you. </strong></em></h4></div></div>

We focus on taking the teeny-weeny step and actually doing it. That motivates and recharges us into taking the second small step. They can be disasters, losses, deaths, breakups, losing a job, losing a friend and any other event that can cause a traumatic effect.</strong></p></div></div></div></div></div><div class="thrv_wrapper thrv-columns" style="--tcb-col-el-width:688.5;"><div class="tcb-flex-row v-2 tcb--cols--2 tcb-resized"><div class="tcb-flex-col" data-css="tve-u-17ff6d077fd" style=""><div class="tcb-col"><div class="thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element">	<p dir="ltr"><strong>Trauma is also caused by seemingly normal events, which have traumatic effects.</strong></p><p dir="ltr"><strong>For example, a young child being bullied at school is traumatic to the child. I will answer these questions in another article.</strong></p></div></div>

But even before that we need to know and accept that we are anxious and then and only then we can take the steps to calm.</p>

Unless we are educated about anxiety, unless we understand clearly what causes anxiety, what causes panic, how our body reacts to it, it is very difficult to start actively taking action to calm ourselves. It is important that we start in this education process much earlier or at least do that when we are not having an anxiety attack.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">I call it ‘<em>Calm Education</em>’ because just educating ourselves about anxiety, the fight-flight response and the nervous system response is an act of gaining back control. When we feel a little bit more in control, we have already started the anxiety calming process.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-text-align-center has-text-color" style="color: #4f2379;"><strong>Calming Observation</strong></p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">In this step we start noticing the effects on our body in an observer like fashion. Be sure to do it non-judgmentally. Try and pretend that you are observing someone else’s body. That might help keep it non-judgmental.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Identify what is happening in your body by giving a name to the physical sensations. For example, you can say, ‘<em>My heart seems to be beating really fast</em>’, ‘<em>My neck and shoulders are hurting</em>’, ‘<em>I am unable to focus on my work</em>’ and so on.</p>

<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Calm observation helps you really understand what is really going on in your body. This helps prevent you from jumping to disastrous conclusions like, ‘<em>I must be having a heart attack</em>’ while in reality you are experiencing anxiety.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-text-align-center has-text-color" style="color: #4f2379;"><strong>Calming Reminders</strong></p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Once you observe your body is going through some of the anxiety symptoms, calmly remind yourself that &#8216;<em>this is only anxiety</em>&#8216; and that &#8216;<em>it will pass away soon</em>&#8216;.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Some affirmations we can say, ‘<em>This is only anxiety. It will pass away soon</em>.’ ‘<em>This is a temporary situation. I am experiencing a fight-flight-freeze situation</em>.’</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">A calming reminder helps you take away the fear of something far worse happening.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-text-align-center has-text-color" style="color: #4f2379;"><strong>Calming Breath</strong></p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Now we can start taking some slow breaths to physically calm the body. Slow and deep breaths can stimulate the relaxation response and turn off the triple-f response (fight-flight-freeze response).</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Breathing is one of the most potent ways to calm ourselves. <p class="has-black-color has-text-color">I prefer to do a counting breath, breathe in for a count of 4 breaths and breathe out to a count of 8. You can start with 3-6 and slowly move to a 4-8 count. Try and see which count is most beneficial for you. Do this at least 10 -20 breaths at a time to see some good results. You can repeat as needed.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">The goal is to lengthen your exhalation because that is what kicks start your vagal response and soothes your nervous system. The longer your exhale, the calmer you feel.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-text-align-center has-text-color" style="color: #4f2379;"><strong>Calming Movement</strong></p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Once you have calmed yourself a little bit by using your breath, it’s time to move.</p>
</p>

You can try simple stretching, exercise, dance, walking or yoga or any other movement that appeals to you.</p>

<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Try some simple stretches to start this. Some stretches you can try:  flex your fingers and wrists, move your neck sideways, stretch your shoulders up and down.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-text-align-center has-text-color" style="color: #4f2379;"><strong>Calming Mindfulness</strong></p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Mindfulness by itself is calming. When we use mindfulness as a technique to calm our body during anxiety, I refer to this as ‘<em>Calming Mindfulness</em>’.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">This is a great way to ground yourself and bring your focus back to the body and to your surroundings.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Look around and say aloud what you see. For example, ‘<em>I see a chest of drawers in front of me, I see clouds forming in the sky</em>’. Identify at least 3-4 things that you see and say it aloud.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Now say aloud what you hear. For example: ‘<em>I hear the fan sound, I hear the sound of cars in the road</em>’. Identify at least 2-3 sounds you hear and say it aloud.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Now say aloud at least one thing you can smell. Example: ‘<em>I smell the aroma of today’s lunch</em>’.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">When we focus on the other senses and saying it aloud, that forces the mind to get detached from the anxious thought and come back to the present reality.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-text-align-center has-text-color" style="color: #4f2379;"><strong>Calming Words</strong></p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">By this time, you would already be feeling much calmer than before. To strengthen that calm, try repeating some phrases or affirmations.</p>

<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Some examples can be: ‘<em>I am getting better and better at managing my anxiety</em>’ or ‘<em>I am slowly teaching my nervous system to calm down</em>’ or ‘<em>With every breath I am getting more and more calmer.</em>’</p>

<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">Focusing on a phrase like this can help focus your mind and reassure it.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">It is important that you choose the phrase beforehand and not at the moment of panic.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">To summarize this was a seven-step process of calming that will help restore your body and mind to a more relaxed state. Each of these steps has an active component to calm but the combined effect of using all of these is very powerful and will help you get into a state of calm, ease and relaxation much more quickly.</p>
</p>
<p class="has-black-color has-text-color">But mind you, you have got to try it to experience it. Remember, to &#8216;<em>BE &#8211; CALM</em>&#8216;</p>

<p data-css="tve-u-17fbd5f25fc" style="">Our body perceives ‘danger’ and shifts into a ‘fight, flight, freeze’ mode. This is a survival mechanism inbuilt into the nervous system to protect us from all kinds of danger. When the body is in this triple F mode (fight, flight, freeze), the blood flows more into the limbs preparing us to run or fight or become immobile (whichever is suitable in the moment). These are all preprogrammed survival methods to help us stay alive in the face of danger.</p>

<p style="" data-css="tve-u-17fbd68d9a8">Now take the situation of anxiety, which is an intense worry about something, someone or about a situation. When the worry surfaces, the body understands it to be a situation where there is danger.&nbsp;</p>
